Batavia is one of many historic cities along Illinois’ Fox River. It was once the windmill design and manufacturing capital of the world. Icons of that past still dot the city skyline and public spaces; they have become public art and formed the core of the original logo. As we followed the sparc process we found the community was split right down the middle – keep the windmills or move on to something fresh and new. That community input framed the branding challenge: create a vibrant, contemporary brand that recognizes the city’s twenty first century strengths — its people — while honoring history. The brand sparc created brings to life both these passions. It turns the windmill into contemporary art and recognizes the power of the neighbors who make this a warm and inclusive community. Implementation now awaits the completion of a strategic planning process.
